"Some Pig"
In honor of the book Charlotte's Web...Rem named his pig Wilbur so we hung a little spider's web behind his pen for good luck!

Well, we survived Fair Week and Remington had a great experience. Truly, Wilbur was a pretty nice pig if I do say so myself. When we first brought him to his pen at the Fair he was pretty unhappy though being by himself and boy did he make quite the racket in the Pig Barn. Later, we decided that if we put Rem's friends pig in with him he might settle down and it did the trick. He was much happier after that. Pigs don't like to be alone.

On the morning after arriving at the fair Wilbur passed the ultrasound test. (They can only have 1.25 inches of back fat in order to sell at the 4-H sale and he scraped by with 1.03...whew.) On the flip side...we didn't have to worry about him making weight since he weighed in at a whopping 285 lbs. Let's just say he was one "fat and happy" pig. His philosophy might as well been...I'll do what you want just show me where the food is :) He was a pretty easy keeper.

We learned a lot during fair week and everyone pitched in to help. Ember and Brooklyn were right there cheering and supporting their big brother. Even Grandma Nield, Aunt Jana and Uncle LeRoy were able to come and watch Rem show his pig and that meant a lot to him. Gratefully, our friends were so good to show us the ropes and helped us get Wilbur all clean and shaved for his debut and Eloy was right there in the pig pen with Rem helping get him ready.

Rem all ready for the show

Remington did a great job for his first time and got blue ribbons both in quality and showmanship. We were so proud of him.

It's a Family Affair

Wilbur did pretty well at the 4-H sale too and Remington can't wait to cash in his check so he can open a savings account at the bank.
However, the last night of the fair as Rem said goodbye to Wilbur...the reality of the SALE set in and Rem was feeling pretty sad and was pretty much inconsolable for a couple days. It's hard to get attached and then have to send your pig off to the butcher. He really wanted to keep Wilbur as a pet. We sure will miss good 'ol Wilbur.

He certainly was "Some Pig"

Oh boy, that is so sweet. I feel bad for the poor little guy having to send Wilbur off to market. Life lessons I guess. Del used to even get choked up at the meat plant when the kids would lead in their tame 4-H steers and start crying and saying good bye hanging onto their necks. (this was rare but happened enough times to dread it). What a good Mom you are Marci. I can see your feminine, creative touch everywhere, even the pig barn :-)

that is SOME PIG! he's HUGE! i feel for Rem, I was in kindergarten when we had a pig named 'porky' and i sobbed when they took him away but that was the best ham i ever tasted and i still love ham today thanks to porky! That is so neat how much Rem loves animals and how well he does, he is a true Cowboy!!

What a good looking cowboy. I enjoyed the pics. Wilbur looked really good. I can't believe how big he was. Great Job Rem.
